Choose AI Network Cables by the Complete Link

A cable selection starts with two endpoints and an intended operating mode. Product names such as OSFP, 800G or splitter describe only part of the requirement.

NVIDIA’s LinkX overview groups passive copper, active copper, optical cables, transceivers and fiber assemblies within a wider adapter-and-switch ecosystem. That family description is a starting point, not proof that any two parts form a supported link. LinkX ecosystem overview

Write one link record before selecting a part

Capture the source device and physical port, destination device and port, protocol, target rate, lane mapping, approximate routed distance and rack environment. Add the software and firmware releases that will be used during acceptance.

For breakout links, draw each branch and its destination. Count logical links separately from connector cages. A purchase list with the right total bandwidth can still contain the wrong fan-out.

Check the physical and optical boundaries

Verify the thermal design at both endpoints, including the required heatsink arrangement. Record fiber type, connector, polish, polarity and supported reach for the exact transceiver pair. Do not infer compatibility from a connector that appears to fit.

A management link should be selected against its own endpoint requirements. A 1GbE module has a different purpose from the GPU fabric; it should not inherit an AI-performance claim merely because both appear in the same project.

Apply port-specific restrictions

Some restrictions apply to particular ports, not the entire switch family. For example, NVIDIA’s Q3200 guidance excludes split mode and specified LACC parts on ports 17, 18, 35 and 36. Read the exact list and relevant release before wiring. This Q3200 example must not be generalized to another switch. Q3200 design constraints

Verify lifecycle as well as compatibility

A supported-products table can contain engineering samples alongside general-availability parts. NVIDIA’s ConnectX-9 table explicitly separates these lifecycle categories. A row’s presence therefore does not establish commercial readiness. Versioned compatibility and lifecycle table

Close with a documented acceptance test

After installation, confirm device recognition, negotiated rate, error counters and sustained traffic on every intended path. Exercise breakout branches individually and together. Save serial numbers, labels and results so a replacement can be checked against the same baseline.

The final bill of materials should contain complete order codes and approved alternatives. If the title, ordering row and support matrix disagree, keep the affected field unresolved until the manufacturer clarifies it. A historical deployment or a family-level case study cannot resolve an exact-part conflict.
