Coordinating Switches, SuperNICs, and Cabling for AI Ethernet
Plan an Ethernet compute fabric from traffic requirements and platform compatibility.
Separate traffic roles
Distinguish GPU communication, storage access, service traffic, and management. Record concurrency, cross-rack traffic, growth plans, and the acceptable failure domain before choosing port rates and topology. A high-speed endpoint cannot compensate for insufficient capacity elsewhere in the path.
Choose a platform combination
SN3000, SN4000, SN5000, and SN6000 belong to different platform generations. Verify the switch operating system, required features, adapter variant, and interconnect revision. Decide whether the host needs basic connectivity, AI communication acceleration, or infrastructure offload before selecting a BlueField or ConnectX device.
Complete the BOM
Record the interface, module, cable assembly, and routing length for each link. Record power, connectors, airflow, rails, and management interfaces for each device. For RoCE, assign responsibility for both host and switch configuration and include congestion observations and error counters in acceptance.
Recheck before expansion
Inventory exact part numbers, operating systems, firmware, and installed cables. Recheck support matrices and port capacity before adding nodes, then validate a small interoperable configuration. Diagrams explain material roles and product links support evaluation; neither is a certified bill of materials.
