Define the network role

Compute, storage, service access, and management have different requirements. Record protocol, endpoint count, uplink capacity, and failure domains before choosing InfiniBand or Ethernet. Similar product names do not guarantee the same operating system, management mode, or entitlement.

Build the port budget

Keep physical cages, logical ports, per-port speed, and breakout modes separate. Count host-facing links, uplinks, and dedicated management interfaces independently. Reserve ports for a stated purpose and only count interfaces that support the required operating mode.

Check the rack

Verify height, depth, weight, rails, airflow, supply count, input range, and actual power connectors. DC, busbar, and liquid-cooled systems need matching site infrastructure. Distinguish typical from maximum system power; a PSU rating is not a system-consumption measurement.

Compare software and generations

Confirm firmware, network operating system, management platform, and required features for the exact model. Preserve the existing version inventory when expanding a fabric. Tie tests and quotations to an ordering part number rather than a family label alone.
