Record both endpoints

Write down each device, connector, protocol, and required link rate. OSFP, QSFP112, QSFP56, QSFP28, and QSFP-DD are not interchangeable merely because a speed label matches. For a breakout connection, establish the supported split mode and lane mapping first.

Choose medium and distance

Use the particular cable specification for supported copper reach. Compare DAC, ACC, and AOC separately. For optics, check SMF/MMF, wavelength, connector, APC/UPC polish, polarity, and insertion-loss budget. A nominal module reach is not a calculation for the installed fiber path.

Check physical details

Single-port and twin-port modules have different link counts. Finned, flat-top, RHS, and IHS forms must fit the host cooling design. Fiber assembly length and transceiver reach are separate fields. An ordering-code suffix is not a reliable substitute for an explicit length specification.

Keep the evidence

Record endpoint A module, cable, and endpoint B module with exact part numbers, length, and documentation. Validate link establishment, errors, and temperature before running workloads. Treat a family photograph as a reference unless the specific SKU has been visually confirmed.
