StackWise and StackPower: data stacking is not power sharing

Treat the data stack and the power-sharing system as two separate designs.

The practical distinction

StackWise carries stack data and control traffic. StackPower shares electrical capacity on supported systems. A data stack can be working while the power redundancy objective is not met; the acceptance records must test both independently.

What the product details tell you

  • Stack adapters for C9200, C9200L and C9300L are not universally interchangeable. Confirm whether an offer contains an adapter or a complete kit.
  • PWR-C1, PWR-C4, PWR-C6 and C9K-PWR families require exact host and power-mode checks. Rated output is not measured switch consumption.
  • CAB-SPWR-30CM is a power-sharing cable, not a data stacking cable. Two power supplies do not guarantee full-load redundancy.

Applying it to a project

Draw the data-stack ring separately from power connections. Calculate endpoint PoE plus chassis demand and the capacity remaining after the intended supply failure. Allow space for connector access, bend radius and service replacement.

Checks that resolve the uncertainty

  • Record adapter, cable and power supply part numbers and counts.
  • Validate the intended data-stack topology and member failure behavior.
  • Test power mode and remaining PoE capacity when one supply is removed under an approved maintenance procedure.
