Build the core configuration around the chassis, supervisor, line cards and required redundancy.
The practical distinction
The line-card port count describes one component. It does not prove that a chassis has the required supervisor, fabric capacity, cooling or power. A photograph of a fully populated chassis is a reference illustration, not a packing list.
What the product details tell you
- C9500-16X and C9500-32QC have different port layouts. Compare the actual interfaces rather than treating all C9500 switches as interchangeable.
- C9400-LC-48XS provides 1/10G fiber ports and requires the documented C9400X-SUP-2 or SUP-2XL combination. C9400-LC-24S and -48S are 1G cards.
- Chassis, supervisors, power supplies, fans, optics and software entitlements must be listed separately unless the offered bundle explicitly includes them.
Applying it to a project
Start with service traffic, uplink demand and failure boundaries. Select a supported chassis and supervisor combination, then allocate line-card slots and power. Check usable slot bandwidth as well as the sum of front-panel port rates.
Checks that resolve the uncertainty
- Reconcile the offered bill of materials with the installed hardware.
- Verify boot, module recognition, fabric capacity and supported software.
- Exercise the planned link and supervisor failover behavior.
